About Our Work
Changing Minds With Pick Up A Penny: Children’s mental health support North East

Changing Minds with Pick up a Penny CIC

We understand the connections between physical and mental health, individual challenges, and family dynamics. Our goal is to help families across the North East of England get the help they need.

By working with families and the local business community, we’ve been able to raise enough funds to support 5 families per cycle.

We need your support. These integrative therapies are designed to improve brain function and resolve trauma but we can’t do it alone.

When money shouldn’t be a barrier to healing, it remains one. As waitlists for NHS assistance grow longer and longer, families are turning to Changing Minds with Pick Up A Penny for support.

Won’t you join us on our mission to help families across the North East?

Cutting-edge Mind and Body Therapies to Treat Complex Needs

Effective physical and mental health therapies should be accessible to every family.  With your help, we can support families across the North East, regardless of their financial situation. Because access to healing shouldn’t depend on your bank account.

Through our Pick Up a Penny Community Interest Company (CIC), we provide fully funded access to comprehensive, integrative therapy programmes that would normally cost families thousands of pounds. This thorough, personalised approach recognises that your child’s physical wellness, mental health, brain function, and family dynamics are all interconnected pieces of the same puzzle.

Our integrative approach is particularly well-suited for these conditions because…

Brain-Body Connection: Many of these challenges involve dysregulation in both neurological and physiological systems

Treatment-Resistant Cases: Patients who haven’t responded well to conventional medications or therapy alone

Comorbid Presentations: Multiple overlapping conditions that benefit from holistic treatment

Neuroinflammation: Conditions involving brain inflammation that respond to oxygen therapy and photobiomodulation

Stress-System Dysregulation: Disorders involving the HPA axis and autonomic nervous system

Our comprehensive testing (blood work, microbiome analysis, QEEG brain mapping) helps identify the underlying biological factors contributing to these challenging conditions, allowing for more targeted, personalised therapeutic approaches that address root causes rather than just symptoms.

Dr. Sara Young, PhD

Executive Director of Changing Minds with Pick Up a Penny

It all began with my work in integrative psychotherapy. As I went deeper into the field, I became aware of something that felt impossible to ignore: the way we think about the mind is still caught in the old belief that it exists apart from the body.

But research continues to show the opposite. The brain is adaptable, constantly reshaping itself, and its health is deeply linked to the body. I realised that by taking a more physiological approach to brain health, my clients could not only find relief but also rediscover hope, strength, and new possibilities for growth.

The hardest truth, however, is that many families cannot afford these therapies. I saw parents who wanted to give their children every chance, but financial barriers stood in the way.

That is why I created Changing Minds with Pick Up a Penny, a Community Interest Company (CIC). Through fundraising and community support, we can reach those families who might otherwise feel they have nowhere left to turn, offering them access to life-changing therapies and a chance to see their children thrive.

Every contribution, whether made to Changing Minds or directly to a nominated family, makes a real and lasting difference. Together, we can lift some of the weight these families carry and give more children the chance to heal, grow, and flourish.
